Dr. G.N.V. Brahmam, Head ,
Department Community Studies and Deputy Director, (Scientist-F),
National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) visited IHS on 26/06/2009
and demonstrated preparation of dried blood spots and estimation
of haemoglobin from dried blood spots. The Institute is
participating in a study to measure base line prevalence of
anaemia, intestinal helminths and nutritional status of school
children in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation. Dried
blood spots will be collected from school children and sent to the
IHS Public Health Laboratory at Hyderabad to estimate the blood
haemoglobin. The NIN is helping IHS to develop the technical
skills for dried blood spot collection and standardise the
procedure for haemoglobin estimation from dried blood spots, on a
filter paper which is a unique field based method. This procedure
will be standardized in the IHS public health laboratory and used
in the estimation of haemoglobin among primary school children
during the health baseline assessment. The IHS staff who
participated in the training include Project Coordinator, Head WQT
Lab, Research staff and Medical Lab Technicians who completed B.SC
(MLT) course. The training will be followed by rigorous practical
sessions in the field under the guidance of Scientist, Department
Community Studies, National Institute of Nutrition (NIN).
