Dr.K. Amarender Reddy, MD, Dy
Director in Department of Microbiology of the Institute of
Preventive Medicine (IPM) visited IHS on 2nd July, 2009
at the invitation of the IHS. Dr. Amarender Reddy presented a
detailed lecture on Intestinal Nematodes. He was assisted by Mr.
Sahadev Technician at IPM. Both demonstrated the identification of
worms and ova in the stool sample with help of known specimens
collected from Veterinary Biological Research Institute. Five
Medical Lab Technicians selected to provide laboratory support for
the upcoming School Health - Baseline Survey participated in the
training program. The program was also attended by Ms Srikanthi,
Program Coordinator, Ms Saritha, Head of IHS Water Quality
Laboratory and Gautam Bastian. Mr. Gautam Gustav Bastian, MPA
Candidate at Columbia University's School of International and
Public Affairs, is currently visiting the Azim Premji Foundation,
and is one of the collaborators for the upcoming School Health –
Baseline Survey. The study is a 3 way partnership between Andhra
Pradesh Government, Azim Premji Foundation and The Institute of
Health Systems with support from the World Bank. The main
objective of the study is to measure the health status of primary
school children in study and control schools, prior to
implementation of the interventions. The main measures which will
be collected are various anthropometric measures of child health,
a simple physical examination for vision and Vitamin A
deficiencies, a pin prick blood test for haemoglobin count, and a
stool test for prevalence of worms. |
