William Hsiao, Harvard School of Public Health

William C.Hsiao is the
K.T.Li Professor of Economics and
Director of Program in Health Care
Financing at the Harvard School of Public
Health. He received his Ph.D. in
Economics from Harvard University. Hsiao
led the research team that developed a
rational method, based on the work
required, in setting the "fair"
fees for paying physician services (i.e.,
the resource based relative value scale).
The U.S., Australia, Canada and France
have all adopted his method. Previously,
Hsiao's research concentrated on
economics of health care financing,
design of national health insurance
plans, and behavioral responses of
hospitals and physicians to different
incentives. Currently, his research
focuses on health sector economics and
comparing the performance of health care
systems across many nations. |

Hsiao has advised many
nations on their health sector reforms,
including, Columbia, Poland, Taiwan,
China, Hong Kong, Sweden, Cyprus and
South Africa. He is a consultant to WHO,
IMF and the World Bank. For the United
States, he is served as an advisor to
three U.S.presidents and the
U.S.Congress. Hsiao has published several
monographs and more than one hundred
papers. He is an elected member of the US
National Academy of Science - Institute
of Medicine, the board of Governors of
the Society of Actuaries and Board of
Directors of the National Academy of
Social Insurance. Hsiao also serves on
the editorial boards of several journals |
